GBL is an important chemical raw material and pharmaceutical intermediate, as well as an intermediate for the synthesis of N-methylpyrrolidone, α-pyrrolidone, polyvinylpyrrolidone, α-acetyl-γ-butyrolactone, methionine and butyric acid compounds.
This product has strong solubility and is a good solvent for polyacrylonitrile, epoxy resin, polyvinyl butyral, polyvinyl chloride and its copolymers, and cellulose polymers. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is mainly used to synthesize cyclopropylamine.
Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) is a compound that can be synthesized in the laboratory, but it can also be found in pure wine. γ-butyrolactone has no effect by itself. However, when it is absorbed into the blood, it is subject to the action of lactonase. These enzymes catalyze the conversion of gamma-butyrolactone to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).
As a prodrug of GHB, gamma butyrolactone is sometimes referred to as dehydrated GHB. As the term "dehydration" suggests, GBL does not contain as much water as GHB, and therefore prefers fat or lipophilicity. Compared with GHB, GBL is absorbed faster when consumed with food. This allows it to produce the desired effect faster. However, the duration of action of γ-butyrolactone is also shorter than its counterpart.
The effect of gamma butyrolactone is based on its properties as a GHB prodrug. GHB is similar to a naturally occurring neurotransmitter called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is produced by the brain and acts on receptors to block nerve impulses, thereby obtaining the label of "inhibitory" neurotransmitter.
