3. Product Description:
Cyproheptadine Hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of synthetic methyl piperidine derivatives with antihistamine and antiserotonergic properties. Cyproheptadine competes with free histamine (HA) for binding to HA receptor sites, thereby competitively antagonizing the histamine stimulation of HA receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, large blood vessels, and bronchial smooth muscle. The reagent also competes with free serotonin for binding to serotonin receptor sites. Cyproheptadine has anticholinergic and sedative effects, and has been shown to stimulate appetite and weight gain.

Periactin (cyproheptadine) 4 mg tablet
Cyproheptadine is used to treat allergic reactions (especially hay fever). There is insufficient evidence for this purpose in children, and ketotifen and loratadine have shown equal or better results in comparative small trials.
It is sometimes used as a measure to prevent migraine in children and adolescents, especially in its liquid formulations, but as of 2017, the evidence for this is weak. This use is on the label in the UK and some other countries.
It is also off-label used to treat infant cyclic vomiting syndrome; the only evidence for this use comes from retrospective studies.
Cyproheptadine is sometimes used off-label to improve akathisia in people taking antipsychotic drugs.
It uses off-label treatments for various skin diseases, including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) caused by psychogenic pruritus drugs, as well as preventing the formation of blisters in some people with simple epidermolysis bullosa.
One of the effects of the drug is to increase appetite and weight gain, which leads to its use in wasting children and patients with cystic fibrosis (in the United States it is off-label). Other side effects are mild.
It is sometimes used to treat cases of moderate to severe serotonin syndrome, which is a compound symptom associated with the use of serotonergic drugs (such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and monoamine oxidase inhibitors), and at high levels In the case of use. Serotonin in the blood produced by serotonin-producing carcinoid tumors.
